National Doctors’ Day is observed annually on March 30 in the United States to celebrate physicians who dedicate themselves to taking care of patients and are an essential part of the community.
Learn about the history of National Doctors’ Day and different CME promotions that will be going on to celebrate Doctors across the country.
History of National Doctors’ Day
National Doctors’ Day was first observed on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Elmond, the wife of a doctor, wanted to celebrate her husband’s career by sending greeting cards to all the doctors she knew plus placing red carnation flowers (a flower still used in today’s Doctors’ Day celebrations) on the graves of deceased physicians.
March 30th was chosen to celebrate National Doctors’ Day because it was the first anniversary of a doctor using ether anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long, which was March 30, 1842.
For the next 58 years, the holiday would remain unofficial until Congress recognized it as an official holiday under Proclamation 6253 in 1991.
