Topics Covered

Our Master Clinicians Educator will review the management of a wide range of common adult and pediatric presentations including: accidental caustic eye injury; accidental pediatric ingestions; common food toxicity; common spider, snake, and other insect bites; marine animal envenomation; toxic plants; common medication overdoses such as salicylates, antidepressants, cardiac medications; and more.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to: Recognize the various clinical presentations of the poisoned patient in the outpatient setting, and develop an approach to management and disposition, including transfer to a higher level of care Identify common household medications and chemical agents that can cause toxicity or injury and foods that can cause poisoning Manage salicylate/aspirin toxicity, acetaminophen toxicity, antidepressant toxicity, cardiac medication toxicity, and diabetic medication toxicity Implement a strategy to manage environmental poisoning, including common plant and pesticide poisonings, and terrestrial and marine envenomation.
