This course has been designed to provide a comprehensive overview of some of the most common problem areas of diagnostic pathology in the areas of gastrointestinal, head and neck, breast, gynecologic, genitourinary, and Hepatic pathology, with particular attention paid to the most common problems encountered by practicing pathologists. This course will provide a detailed discussion of some of the most important diagnostic features which allow pathologists to arrive at an accurate diagnosis in each of these problem areas, as well as how to assess essential diagnostic clues to avoid the most common diagnostic pitfalls.

In each lecture, there will be a thorough discussion on the use of appropriate ancillary diagnostic techniques, including both immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology. In addition, some lectures will include case-based discussions including digital slides. There will be sufficient time for interactive discussions between all of the faculty members and the participants.

The course provides detailed information on the evaluation of the normal fetal heart both from an anatomic and functional approach. In keeping with progress in this field, detailed information on the use of three-dimensional ultrasound in fetal echocardiography and cardiac imaging in the early gestation is presented. The course also provides comprehensive evaluation of various cardiac malformations, involving abnormalities of the cardiac chambers and the outflow tracts.

Congenital heart disease is the most common congenital malformation with a significant impact on neonatal morbidity and mortality. Prenatal diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease is a collaborative effort between maternal–fetal medicine specialists and pediatric cardiologists. The renowned course faculty represents the specialties and all are actively involved in caring for pregnancies complicated with fetal cardiac abnormalities.

This course provides a broad review and dialogue on fetal echocardiography and should be extremely helpful to physicians and sonographers involved in prenatal diagnosis and in caring for children born with congenital heart disease. We hope that you will join us.

This course is designed for board-certified radiologists in private or academic practice, trainees in diagnostic imaging, and other physicians seeking insight into the evolving role of imaging in patient care. Allied healthcare professionals interested in recent advances in radiology will also benefit from this course.

In addition, Wednesday’s program includes a dedicated sonography track designed for sonographers, ultrasound technologists, and allied imaging professionals. Sessions will focus on practical scanning techniques, clinical applications, and recent advances in ultrasound across vascular, abdominal, obstetric, thyroid, pediatric, and women’s imaging.

This course also includes four hours of radiation safety education designed to meet the continuing education requirements for physicians licensed in California.

Core competencies defined by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for radiology training include patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice. The educational need for this course was ascertained from several sources. Feedback on questionnaires from prior UCSD Breast Imaging courses has indicated a need for radiology courses that offer a focused curriculum emphasizing common pathologies, differential diagnosis, interventional procedures, and emerging technologies.
The mammography accreditation requirements set forth by the American College of Radiology (2009) requires that interpreting physicians meet the minimum MQSA qualifications including 15 category 1 CME credits in a 36-month period.

This course emphasizes the lecture format to convey maximal information to the participants. The lecture format also includes a case presentation and discussion. The course is supplemented by question-and-answer sessions because different learning methods tend to suit different doctors and different identified learning needs. (Grant)
Expert faculty opinion has also identified a need for training in detailed breast histology and pathology correlation, MR indications and protocol design, and multidisciplinary breast care, based on new findings published in the literature, our own research, and our extensive experience teaching at various training levels locally, nationally, and internationally.

Additionally, a forward-looking plenary session, a dynamic rapid-fire case review session, and a session dedicated to challenging and enriching non-interpretive topics will round out the program.

The course will provide details of some of the most important diagnostic features which allow pathologists to make accurate diagnoses in each of these subspecialty areas, as well as how to assess essential diagnostic clues and avoid the most common diagnostic pitfalls. Each lecture will also provide a discussion on the use of ancillary diagnostic techniques, including immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology. This symposium is designed to provide an update on a variety of new cutting-edge developments in diagnostic imaging and intervention. Topics include new techniques and practical applications of MRI and CT with an update into the clinical applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Emphasis of this meeting is on the practical clinical uses of new technologies and their impact on the future of radiology practice. Faculty members have been selected for their teaching ability, as well as their expertise.

This seminar is designed to provide a practical review of common pulmonary conditions and diagnostic challenges encountered in clinical practice. Dr. Roland B. El Ghazal will discuss topics including chronic cough, asthma, COPD, lung nodules, lung cancer screening, bronchiectasis, shortness of breath, and important chest CT findings. Emphasis will be placed on practical diagnostic approaches, current management strategies, and clinical pearls.
