The economic and structural forces driving climate change also powerfully influence public health, health equity, and the social determinants of health. This course equips clinicians and health leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to understand and influence the policies and systems shaping community health at the individual, local, and regional levels. Participants will explore how decisions around transportation, the built environment, and energy directly affect health outcomes, vulnerability, and resilience. Through expert-led instruction and perspectives from community leaders, learners will gain practical skills in policy analysis, public messaging, and advocacy. Emphasis is placed on real-world application, including the development of policy briefs and strategies for effective engagement. By centering collaboration, co-production, and environmental justice, this course prepares health professionals to translate evidence into action and lead meaningful change in the communities they serve.

The U.S. healthcare sector accounts for approximately 8.5% of national carbon emissions, making sustainability a critical responsibility and opportunity for today’s healthcare leaders. This course empowers clinicians to understand healthcare’s environmental footprint and apply practical, cost-effective strategies that improve both operational performance and patient health. Participants will explore actionable approaches including energy efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable clinical practices, environmentally responsible purchasing, and healthier food systems. Emphasis is placed on solutions that align environmental stewardship with financial savings and quality improvement. By positioning clinicians as leaders in sustainability, this course equips healthcare professionals to drive institutional change, reduce emissions, and strengthen their organization’s commitment to community health, resilience, and long-term well-being.

Foundations in Climate Medicine equips clinicians to understand and communicate the complex intersections of public health, climate science, energy policy, earth science, and governance. Participants learn to translate scientific insights—such as the links between extreme heat and urban illness, biodiversity loss and pandemics, or extreme weather and food insecurity—into actionable strategies for advocacy and policy change. Clinicians trained in Climate Medicine are uniquely positioned to craft patient-centered narratives that influence policymakers, community leaders, and health system decision-makers, advancing climate-resilient health policies, promoting environmental justice, and guiding health systems toward decarbonization.
