Educational Symposia – 28th Annual Breast Imaging and Interventions Update – October 30 – November 1, 2026

Core competencies defined by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for radiology training include patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice. (Collins) This program is designed to promote ongoing learning and development of these core competencies.

The educational need for this course was ascertained from several sources. Feedback on questionnaires from prior UCSD Breast Imaging courses has indicated a need for radiology courses that offer a focused curriculum emphasizing common pathologies, differential diagnosis, interventional procedures, and emerging technologies.
The mammography accreditation requirements set forth by the American College of Radiology (2009) requires that interpreting physicians meet the minimum MQSA qualifications including 15 category 1 CME credits in a 36-month period.

This course emphasizes the lecture format to convey maximal information to the participants. The lecture format also includes a case presentation and discussion. The course is supplemented by question-and-answer sessions because different learning methods tend to suit different doctors and different identified learning needs. (Grant)
Expert faculty opinion has also identified a need for training in detailed breast histology and pathology correlation, MR indications and protocol design, and multidisciplinary breast care, based on new findings published in the literature, our own research, and our extensive experience teaching at various training levels locally, nationally, and internationally.

Learning Objectives

Attendees should, at the completion of this course, be able to:

  • Identify imaging findings of acute thoracic, abdominal, and vascular emergencies using CT and ultrasound.
  • Differentiate common and challenging chest, musculoskeletal, and pediatric imaging diagnoses.
  • Recognize key imaging features of neurologic, abdominal, and genitourinary disorders.
  • Apply current ultrasound techniques and standardized reporting guidelines across multiple organ systems.
  • Evaluate advanced imaging applications, including CEUS and specialized pediatric ultrasound examinations.
  • Interpret complex imaging cases to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making.
  • Implement strategies to reduce diagnostic errors and optimize radiology workflow.
  • Apply radiation biology and safety principles to improve patient and provider protection.

Target Audience

"This course is designed for board-certified radiologists in private or academic practice, trainees in diagnostic imaging, and other physicians seeking insight into the evolving role of imaging in patient care. Allied healthcare professionals interested in recent advances in radiology will also benefit from this course. In addition, Wednesday’s program includes a dedicated sonography track designed for sonographers, ultrasound technologists, and allied imaging professionals. Sessions will focus on practical scanning techniques, clinical applications, and recent advances in ultrasound across vascular, abdominal, obstetric, thyroid, pediatric, and women’s imaging. This course also includes four hours of radiation safety education designed to meet the continuing education requirements for physicians licensed in California."
