What are the American Board of Internal Medicine MOC Requirements?

The American Board of American Internal Medicine requires physicians to earn at least 1 MOC activity every 2 years and 100 MOC points (20 which must be medical knowledge) every 5 years to maintain their board certification.

In addition, to stay certified, physicians are required to pass the Internal Medicine MOC exam or the Internal Medicine Knowledge-Check in. If you decide to opt for the MOC exam, you must pass it within the last 10 years of last passing it. If you opt for the Knowledge-Check in instead, you must do this every two years to remain on a “successful path”.

Internal Medicine MOC requirements are designed to ensure physicians stay current in their field of practice and as a result create improved patient satisfaction and patient outcomes. The ABIM claims that MOC “improves value of care without sacrificing quality and that board-certified physicians command higher salaries”. For example, according to the ABIM states that Internists who maintain their board certification have a 19% less mortality rate when treating patients compared to physicians who did not maintain their board certification.

What is the Internal Medicine MOC Exam Exam Dates?

There are four different dates physicians can take the traditional Internal Medicine MOC exam. The four exam dates and registration dates are outlined below:

  • Exam Dates: Apr. 23, 25 or 27, 2018
  • Registration Dates: Jan 8, 2018 – Feb 28, 2018
• Fall 2018
  • Exam Dates: Oct. 22, 24, 26 or 29, 2018
  • Registration Dates: Jan. 8, 2018 – Aug. 15, 2018
• Spring 2019
  • Exam Dates: Apr. 30 or May 1,3, 2019
  • Registration Dates: Dec 1, 2018 – Feb. 28, 2019
• Fall 2019
  • Exam Dates: Oct. 2, 3, 4 or 8, 2019
  • Registration Dates: Dec. 1, 2018 – Aug. 15, 2019
