Employment Goal:

My goal is to participate in medical informatics projects intended to increase medical performance and improve the quality of care provided by physicians and other health care providers. I am especially interested in projects which make online continuing medical education activities more accessible to practicing physicians and which intend to integrate continuing medical education into daily practice.

Present Employment: 

I presently spend much of my professional time updating the Annotated List of Online Continuing Medical Education (CME), http://www.cmelist.com/list.htm and its associated database of online CME. I work frequently as a psychiatrist for Bay Area Community Services (Oakland, CA) and for Bonita House Incorporated (Oakland, CA). I am a Continuing Medical Education (CME) Surveyor for the Institute of Medical Quality of the California Medical Association.

Research: 

Online Continuing Medical Education. Master's Thesis -“The Current Status of Online Continuing Medical Education” – written in 2000 and revised annually or semiannually thereafter. 
Principal Investigator in fourteen pharmaceutical clinical trials, 1986-1996. These trials were carried out in the context of a family medical practice and included studies of anti-infectives, antidepressants, sleeping medications and contraceptives. They were performed under contracts with various American pharmaceutical companies and with the approval of local or national institutional review boards.

Work in Medical Informatics: 

Ongoing evaluation and research into online continuing medical education (CME).
Ongoing use and evaluation of an electronic medical record system (Clinician's Gateway)
Created a market research report on the online medical community/CME market for the use of Elsevier Publishing Company. May and June, 2006. 
Medscape Medical News CME Editor; created a daily CME article and composed questions based on that article. February 2003 through June 2003. 
Winner of MD Net Guide award for Best (Online) CME Directory, January 2003. 
Chief Judge for a Contest to choose the best online continuing medical education (CME) program, April through November, 2002. The prize was awarded at the eHealth Developers' Summit November 6, 2002, at Tempe, Arizona. 
Created a database of online continuing medical education (CME) activities in cooperation with Stanford SKOLAR, and at the behest of the Schering-Plough Pharmaceutical Company.  This project ran from July 2001 through July 2002.

Recent Medical Teaching Activities:

Lecture on the origins of auditory hallucinations in psychotic and non-psychotic inmates; lecture on the metabolic syndrome in psychiatric patients - both delivered at the Alameda County Jail; lectures on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression, delivered at the West Oakland Health Clinic, December 2005 and January 2006. 
Lecture on The Role of Atypical Antipsychotic Medications in the Treatment of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, delivered to the Staff of the Oakland Community Support Center, August 25, 2005. 
Teaching assistant for a course in Medical Study Design Evaluation at the University of California, San Francisco College of Pharmacy. (January through March 2005).
