Since the “Final Revision” of May 23, 2000, the ACCME has released its report for 1999. According to ACCME, the number of “physician-registrants” for online CME went from 13,115 in 1997 to 37,879 in 1998 to 79,536 in 1999. Review of Literature, subsection Surveys of Online CME
Sites, should now read, "The 1997 report (ACCME, 1998) shows that in 1997,
Internet CME accounted for 166 activities (0.33% of total activities),
1,299 credit hours (0.24% of total credit-hours) and 13,115
physician-registrants (0.34% of physician-registrants). The 1998 report (ACCME, 1999) shows that in 1998, Internet CME
accounted for 1516 activities (2.45% of total activities), 5,357 credit
hours (0.9% of total credit-hours) and 37,879 physician-registrants
(1.03% of physician-registrants). The 1999 report (ACCME,
2000) shows that in 1999, Internet CME accounted for 1409 activities
(2.99% of total activities), 5,035 credit hours (0.86% of total
credit-hours) and 79,536 physician-registrants (1.79% of
physician-registrants).” I made an error in reporting the number of courses and hours offered by CMEWeb. I had reported “15 courses” and “15 hours.” In subsequent correspondence with CMEWeb, I was told that “the content has been over 800 hours for a year or more.” CMEWeb was unable to give a more exact number. Since each CMEWeb course offers 1.5 hours of credit, I have decided to use 533 for the number of courses and 800 for the number of credit hours. Readers should be aware therefore that there are errors in certain tables and text. In Table 6 - Alphabetical List of Sites with Numbers of Course and Credits, the entry for CMEWeb should read “533 courses and 800 credit-hours.” The totals should read, “2392 courses and 3845 credit-hours.” Results, (1) How Many Online CME Sites Exist, and How Many Courses and
Credit Hours Of CME Do They Offer?, should read, “ Ninety-six sites
offering 2392 courses totaling 3845 credit hours of ACCME-accredited
online CME were found. “ Results, (7) The Size of Online CME sites should read, “Sites fall into several groups according to the number of courses and hours of credit offered. There are four sites offering greater than 100 hours of credit. These sites are HealthStream University (about 415 courses adding up to about 830 hours), Medscape (about 400 courses; most are one hour, totaling about 400 hours), ArcMesa (about 54 courses totaling 207 hours) and CMEWeb (about 533 courses totaling about 800 hours). At the other end of the spectrum, there are 25 sites that offer 4 or fewer credit hours of instruction. The remainder of the sites fall in between these extremes as shown.” The following table should read: The Size of Online CME Sites
In Discussion, the subsection, The Growing Gap Between Large Sites and Small Sites, should read, “The four largest sites (HealthStream, CMEWeb, Medscape and ArcMesa) account for about 58% of the available hours. The thirty-one smallest sites account for only 2% of the number of the available credit hours. “ |
